It was back in 2012 when PayPal Here was released. PayPal’s first credit card reader allowed merchants to process payments using mobile devices. The hardware is being refreshed after three years as today PayPal announced a new version of its credit card reader. It brings support for EMV Chip and Pin cards in the U.S., as well as Windows powered devices, so PayPal Here is now compatible with Windows 8.1 powered smartphones and tablets as well.

Never before has PayPal Here supported Windows. Its a big deal for Microsoft as the company is now positioning its Surface Pro 3 tablet as a complete point-of-sale solution which will let merchants process payments, keep their finances in check and do just about anything with one single device.

Microsoft has put together a complete solution so interested merchants will be able to purchase a Surface Pro 3 tablet with PayPal Here card reader and some new portable and fixed enclosures in the near future.

PayPal’s new card reader will be released later this year. The company says it will support any chip or magnetic stripe card, as well as contactless payment services like mobile wallets. It will be possible to make contactless transactions using Bluetooth. Small businesses in the country will be able to pick up these new card readers from PayPal within a few months time.
