The love-hate relationship between Samsung and Apple has long been documented. Both companies have fought long and costly battles in court against each other over patent disputes, and it has been rumored countless times that Apple wants to shift its business away from Samsung. The Korean giant has long been a component manufacturer for Apple and that relationship looks set to continue. A new report claims Apple has awarded orders to Samsung for the production of processors meant for its first smartwatch, the Apple Watch.

Apple introduced its smartwatch last year and said that it would be available for purchase in early 2015. So far a confirmed release date has not been provided but speculation is that the Apple Watch will hit the market in March.

Citing industry sources Digitimes reports that Samsung has received orders for the production of 3,000-4,000 12-inch wafers monthly on its 28nm process technology from Apple, and that the process it builds will be hosted inside the S1 system-in-package that Apple talked about during the Apple Watch’s unveiling.

The S1 system-in-package reportedly consists of other components as well like NAND flash, mobile DRAM and various chips. SiP modules for the Apple Watch are said to be provided by Advanced Semiconductor Engineering.

Neither Samsung nor Apple have confirmed this report, which isn’t surprising at all, supply chain speculation rarely gets a response from the companies.
