steamThere are some gamers out there who love to game with an FPS counter on their screen. This is to check to see how well their computers are performing during a session of gaming, and also to let them know if something is wrong when it shouldn’t be, such as FPS decreasing dramatically in places where it shouldn’t, and so on.

It can also be used for bragging rights if you’re into that sort of thing. Now the good news for Steam gamers is that Valve has recently introduced a native built-in FPS counter of their own. This means that if you were previously relying on an add-on, well you can get rid of that, unless of course the add-on is a better choice.

However we should note that the built-in FPS counter is only applicable to those who have opted in for the Steam Client Beta, so if you haven’t then you can go ahead and keep using the add-on until Valve decides to add the FPS counter to the regular Steam client that everyone else uses. In the meantime Valve has also updated the Steam Client Beta with some fixes and changes.

This includes video playback fixes for OS X and Linux users, reloading settings values, and also reduced CPU usage when drawing animated images or videos. There are also some improvements made to broadcast performance as well.
