twitter studySocial media plays a huge role in helping companies launch new products, post updates, run promotions, and so on, which is why it does not come as a huge surprise to learn that Twitter has had a role in helping to drive box office sales in the UK. Twitter has recently commissioned a study that revealed that the social network is responsible for driving as much as 18.2% of box office sales.

This is 18.2% over a three-year period, which according to Twitter, “represents a combination of Tweets sent by film fans about movies and Twitter advertising run by film studios and marketers.” The study also found that out of that 18.2%, the majority came from tweets from users who were talking about the upcoming shows.

In fact it was found that 3 out of 5 said that Twitter had played a role in influencing their decision to see a particular film. Twitter also emphasized that the social network had a role to play at every stage of the movie’s lifecycle, such as its production stage, trailer release, launch buzz, and so on. 46% of those who participated in the study also revealed that they had watched a trailer on Twitter.

Now like we said, this is a commissioned study which is why we’re not surprised to learn that Twitter is basically trying to promote their effectiveness at marketing as well as promoted accounts, but at the same time we can’t deny the effectiveness of social media, but what do you guys think? Do you agree with the study that Twitter (and other social media) plays a role in deciding what movie you should watch?
