blackberry-leap-2

It hasn’t been long since BlackBerry launched its two high-end devices, the Passport and the Classic, it is now due to bring to market a low-end or mid-range device that will take the baton from the BlackBerry Z3. The Z3 was announced at Mobile World Congress 2014 and with this year’s event just a few days away there’s speculation that a Z3 successor might be unveiled in Barcelona. It might be the device we see in these leaked pictures, BlackBerry Leap, a.k.a the BlackBerry Rio.

BlackBerry Leap might be the moniker this device takes to market. From what we have heard about it up till now this isn’t a high-end device by any means.

The design itself is quite similar to that of the BlackBerry Z3, which was very well received in emerging markets, particularly because of the fact that it was priced under $200.

BlackBerry Leap is expected to retain that price point. Rumored specifications include a dualcore 1.5GHz MSM8960 processor with 2GB RAM, 5-inch 1280×720 pixel resolution display, 8 megapixel rear and 2 megapixel front camera, 16GB onboard storage with microSD card support, Penta Band LTE + 4G hotspot support all in a package that comes in at just 9.5mm thick.

A confirmed release date is not known at this point, an announcement is surely expected at MWC 2015, and if it is unveiled at the event one can expect it to arrive in emerging markets initially starting April or May 2015.
