corning-curvedAs many of you guys are probably aware, Apple at one point was rumored to have considered using sapphire for its displays, but as you can tell from Apple’s latest iOS devices, that is not the case. Will that be the case for the future? It’s hard to tell, but in the meantime perhaps to help combat the hype surrounding sapphire and to market their own product, Corning has announced a new product.

The company has recently announced that they are planning on shipping a new type of glass they have been working on as part of Project Phire. Corning claims that this new glass is said to be able to withstand scratches almost as well as sapphire, and at the same time providing superior drop protection.

Corning had previously announced Gorilla Glass 4 which is expected to make its way into newer smartphones. Based on Corning’s demonstrations, Gorilla Glass 4 is a pretty impressive piece of materials, but if Project Phire’s description is anything to go by, we have to admit that we’re much more excited about that.

The company has yet to publicly demonstrate Project Phire like they have with Gorilla Glass 4, but hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see it become a reality.
