freezewayGetting around in a city would see many different modes of transport, ranging from walking to cycling, skateboarding, riding a motorcycle, and driving a car. Oh yeah, there is also public transport. However, it seems that over at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, there is a proposal which could see yet another mode of transportation, so to speak, being added to the list – at least seasonally, through the introduction of a specific route just for ice skaters.

This particular route would be known as the Freezeway, where all 6.8 miles of ice through Edmonton will then make use of existing pathways in the city. It would mean making use of an abandoned rail line as well, which is a good way of putting something that has not seen action in a long time to good use. The construction of curbs along each side of the route will then enable collected water to freeze when the mercury falls. Right now, this proposal is being finalized where location and cost are concerned, as the summer months will see the Freezeway being used by cyclists instead.

Sounds like a brilliant idea, don’t you think so? After all, one should not look at winter like some sort of curse, but a blessing as well.
