It was reported last week that Microsoft may have acquired the makers of the popular Sunrise calendar application. The news didn’t seem too far fetched given Microsoft’s recent focus on making its presence felt on rival mobile platforms. Sunrise happens to be particularly popular with iOS users and Microsoft was reported to have paid $100 million for it, but at the time the company declined to comment on this matter. Today though it formally announced the acquisition of Sunrise.

The $100 million figure was rumored and even though it has made the official announcement neither side has disclosed the price tag. Microsoft broke the news through a video posted on its YouTube channel.

Just two months back Microsoft acquired Acompli, a popular email app for iOS and Android, which was later rebranded as Outlook across both platforms.

Microsoft hasn’t detailed its plans for Sunrise as yet so it can’t really be said for sure how it will use Sunrise in the future. It is highly likely that features from this app will be brought over to Outlook, while already has a calendar, but Sunrise’s features are undoubtedly more powerful.

For now Sunrise exists as an independent app and hasn’t been pulled. It can still be downloaded for iOS and Android from the App Store and Google Play Store respectively.
