If you have seen Sonos products you will be well aware that the company usually tends to stick with its neutral hardware color schemes. Today though it showed us that it is capable of stepping outside this comfort zone. The Sonos Blue Note Play:1 limited edition speaker has been announced today. It the first limited edition speaker from Sonos that celebrates over 75 years of jazz with a custom colorful design, and provides users access to exclusive playlists.

Sonos has produced this speaker in collaboration with Blue Note Records, the iconic jazz label, that’s celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Tad Toulis, Sonos VP of Design, said that the company wanted to create an expression of Blue Note’s singular style “while embracing all the idiosyncrasies of a live performance.”

For the purpose the company came up with a custom color that has been developed with hand-painting techniques and “strategic use of robots.” The result is that the speaker’s finish has a vertical fade from dark navy to cerulean blue.

The limited edition Blue Note Play:1 speaker has Blue Note on Sonos radio station built in the main menu of the Sonos app. This will provide users with a year of Blue Note programming with three curated channels.

You will have to be quick if you want to pick up this limited edition speaker. Only 4,100 units have been produced and will be sold exclusively though Sonos.com for $250. Timing will be revealed over the next few weeks.
