Back in CES 2014, Sony took the wraps off the Sony SmartEyeglass prototype. It is an interesting device and for those wondering when it would be released, a recent pitstop at the FCC and the launch of its accompanying smartphone app appeared to be the precursor to the official launch.

For those who had their eye on the device, you will be pleased to learn that Sony has officially announced that they will now start to accept pre-orders for the wearable. However we should note that the pre-order is for the Developer Edition, meaning that this probably isn’t the final product meant for consumers.

However if you’re a developer looking to take advantage of the technology for a cool idea, then perhaps it could be worth checking out. It will be priced at around $840 and will be available for pre-order in the UK and Germany and is expected to begin shipping in March. It is unclear as to when the Developer Edition will be making its way stateside but like we said, with the wearable spotted at the FCC, perhaps we won’t have to wait too long.

For those hearing about the Sony SmartEyeglass for the first time, you could think of it as being somewhat similar to Google Glass. However the SmartEyeglass acts more like a pair of goggles and will offer up a full-frame transparent lens, thus giving you a more immersive augmented reality experience. It will work in conjunction with your phone and will come with a wired controller (although we’d prefer wireless, but then again this is a Developer Edition).
