verizon-copper-theftIt looks like Verizon has dangled an extremely juicy carrot in front of the masses – through the offer of a reward that can amount up to $50,000 for information that could result in the arrest and prosecution of individuals who are responsible for the thefts of copper telephone cables over in Beaver, Fayette, Lawrence and Washington counties. Such thefts are not only a crime, but they have resulted in a higher risk to public safety since hundreds of customers would have experienced unnecessary telephone service outages – which could result in a death, should someone happen to have to make an emergency call at that point in time.

In fact, the most recent theft happened just before January passed the 2015 baton over to February in Wampum, where approximately 200 feet of copper cable got scooted away near the intersection of Old Route 18 and Route 18, resulting in a service outage for over 90 Verizon customers. Ever since the beginning of last year, close to 30 incidents have happened, and this has resulted in over 16,000 feet of copper cable stolen and more than $300,000 in damages.

It sure as heck isn’t enjoyable to be a Verizon customer in the Brownsville, Burgettstown, New Castle and Wampum areas since those are the “hot spots” for such theft. Hopefully this reward will be enticing enough to put the pieces of the puzzle together! [Press Release]
