hearthstoneWe know that Blizzard’s free-to-play card game Hearthstone is expected to make its way onto smartphones later this year, but the question is will the game feature cross-play support? This means that those playing on smartphones should have no problems playing games with those on tablets or on the PC.

Now given that the smartphone version is expected to feature a more mobile optimized user interface, we suppose this is a fair question. Thankfully the answer is yes, there will be cross-play support and that there will basically be no difference in accounts. This was confirmed by Hearthstone’s lead designer Eric Dodds in an interview with GameSpot.

According to Dodds, “It will be your exact same account, so all your cards on tablet or PC will be available on your phone too. When you start a match on a phone, you could be playing someone on another phone, someone on a tablet, on a PC, who knows? It’s all one big ecosystem.” Of course there will also be the issue of battery life and that is an area they are looking into.

Dodds says, “One thing we’re constantly thinking about is how to make the most of the phone’s battery.” He also talks about the need for a stable connection. “I don’t know if it uses a lot of data. You have to have a constant connection though. I wouldn’t recommend playing it on a train.” There is still no official date on the mobile phone version of Hearthstone but we’ll keep our eyes peeled all the same.
