feeling_fatWe’re sure that we have all at one point or the other eaten to the point where we feel like bursting. Sometimes we like to express this by saying that we’re feeling so “fat” which more or less gives the other person the general idea of what we’re trying to convey – a sense of fullness or a sense of being a bit greedy at the dinner table.

However it seems that not everyone appreciates that form of expression and the Endangered Bodies have recently filed a petition asking Facebook to remove the feeling “fat” option from its status updates because they claim that “fat is not a feeling”. They have since gathered seven young activists from around the world to serve as its ambassadors for their petition.

According to one of their activists, an Ohio-based graduate student and playwright Catherine Weingarten, “I always had this idea of ‘I’m fat,’ ‘I feel fat,’ but when I was saying that, that wasn’t actually how I was feeling.” Weingarten later adds, “For me, when I see the words ‘I feel fat,’ it takes me back to when I was struggling, and I don’t want people to not take it seriously. When people see that on Facebook, I want them to realize that it’s not just a light, cute sort of thing for everyone.”

Facebook however defends their choice of adding that option, stating that if a friend notices that another friend might have posted something indicating an eating disorder, they should help them seek help. The social network also added that they are working with the National Eating Disorders Association to help provide resources to those who might be struggling with eating disorders, but what do you guys think of the petition? Should Facebook remove it?
