The fifth season is yet to air but already HBO has renewed Game of Thrones for a sixth season. It makes sense for the cable giant to do that. Game of Thrones is a massive success. One might wonder if HBO will ever decide to make a movie after the series ends? It did so with Entourage and that too many years after that show ended. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo says the cable giant has no plans to develop a Game of Thrones feature film.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly Lombardo said that one of the reasons why a feature film is not being pursued is because HBO currently requires viewers to pay a subscription fee so that they can watch the series.

He agrees that while the topic of a film has come up the promise that HBO makes to its subscribers is that they’ll be taken to the end of the show that they’re paying for. “I feel that on some level [a movie would be] changing the rules: Now you have to pay $16 to see how your show ends.”

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have already said that the show will be wrapped up by the seventh or the eighth season. Even though Lombardo hopes that there will be a longer run he says that ultimately it’s the showrunners’ vision. If they believe they are done with the story then that will be the end of it.

HBO has been in the news recently as it announced HBO Now. It’s a new over-the-top internet TV streaming service which for $15 per month will provide subscribers with access to all current and existing content that it has to offer.

The service launches next month and will be exclusive to Apple devices for three months.
