343 Industries today announced a new project that it has been working on with Saber Interactive and Innova Systems. It’s called Halo Online. The developer has created this new free-to-play PC title which is going to be released as a closed beta exclusively in Russia. 343 Industries hasn’t said if it ever plans on bringing Halo Online to other countries in its closed beta state.

According to 343 Industries Halo Online runs on a “highly modified” version of the Halo 3 engine. The game has been optimized for smooth performance on lower-end computers. The title doesn’t have a campaign mode.

Halo Online is set on Anvil, a secret UNSC space installation, where Spartan-IV soldiers live and train together in war exercises so that they can keep their battle skills in top shape. The soldiers also get to test “experimental technology.”

The developer says that during the Halo Online closed beta test it will continue to modify and adjust the gameplay, in-game economy and features.

The Q&A posted on the developer’s blog says that Halo Online is a learning opportunity for 343 Industries as it seeks to develop new ways to welcome more fans to the Halo franchise.

At this point in time it doesn’t have a definitive launch date for the title. First it has to get done with the closed beta test in Russia which begins this spring.
