samsung-galaxy-s6-edge_012With handsets like the LG G Flex 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, companies like Samsung and LG have shown us that handsets with curved displays are a possibility, but what about handsets with foldable displays? When are those coming? We have seen the technology but in terms of implementation, Samsung believes that 2016 could be the year that we finally see it.

According to a report from Business Korea, an official from Samsung Display was quoted as saying, “The industry believes that the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be possible in 2016.” However we should note that this is word from Samsung Display who primarily deals in the displays and screens used by Samsung’s products, so while flexible and foldable displays are a possibility, there are other factors that have to be taken into consideration.

For example not only does the display have to be flexible, but the rest of the phone’s innards as well, such as its circuitry, and let’s not forget the battery which also takes up a big portion of the phone’s internal hardware. After all what use is a foldable display if the rest of the phone isn’t foldable, right?

However if we were to talk about a foldable phone similar to a flip phone, that might be a possibility as the components could be separated into two sections, with only the middle portion folding. Either way it is an exciting possibility and hopefully 2016 will truly be the year we see such devices.
