flashstorage13inchmacbookairOne of the claims Apple made about their new refreshed 13-inch MacBook Air is that it will be twice as fast in terms of storage compared to the previous generation. This is thanks to the use of the new PCIe-based flash storage that was unfortunately not brought over to the refreshed 11-inch MacBook Air.

That being said are Apple’s claims true or is it just marketing speak? It turns out that there is some truth to their claims. The folks at iFixit (via MacRumors) have recently torn down the new 13-inch MacBook Pro and according to their tests, it was indeed proven to nearly twice as fast as the SSD storage found on last year’s MacBook Air.

The test was conducted using Black Magic’s Disk Speed Test and according to the results, the 11-inch MacBook Air managed write speeds of 315MB/s and read speeds of 668MB/s. As for the new 13-inch MacBook Air, it managed a write speed of 629.9MB/s and a read speed of 1285.4MB/s. Granted it’s not exactly double the speed but we reckon it is pretty close.

This follows early benchmark results which reveal that save for the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, both the 11- and 13-inch MacBook Airs performed slightly better than their predecessors.
