playstation_mobileSony’s PlayStation Mobile platform was a great idea to help bridge Sony’s mobile devices and the PS Vita’s library of games. It was launched back in 2012 and allowed developers to create games that would run on both platforms with the idea that Sony’s Android handsets could also be used as an alternative to the PS Vita.

Unfortunately despite Sony’s best intentions, it looks like PlayStation Mobile will be shutting down. Sony Japan has recently announced their plans to close the service which will be done in two waves. The first wave will begin by closing the PlayStation Mobile store on the 15th of July. Gamers who already bought their games and re-download them.

However come 10th of September, users will no longer be able to access PlayStation Mobile on devices that they have not authenticated, so if you have yet to authenticate your device you should probably go ahead and do that before it is too late. This follows Sony’s move from last year when they ended Android support for PlayStation Mobile.

In any case this could be bad news for indie devs who were looking to create more games for the PS Vita platform, but so far Sony has done a pretty good job at releasing indie titles via the PlayStation Store, so perhaps not all is lost. Will any of you guys miss PlayStation Mobile upon its closure?
