periscopeOn social media websites like Facebook or Twitter, users can tweet and post their statuses live and update them as they go along. This is great if you’re following a particular user for a particular reason, like news, updates on events, covering of a live concert, and so on. However if you’re more into live streaming, then Twitter has got you covered with the launch of Periscope.

This is a video streaming app that Twitter has been working on since they acquired the company earlier this year. Basically users will be able to start up live video streams via their mobile devices anytime and users will be able to tune in and chat with them at the same time. So for example if you were attending an event, you could launch Periscope and have your followers join you as you walk around the event.

Granted one could always record a video and upload it later that covers the entire event, but for those who’d rather be in the moment, then Periscope could be an app worth checking out. Twitter’s launch of Periscope also seems to be a direct competitor to Meerkat that made live streaming via Twitter incredibly popular during SXSW.

However Periscope is said to be a more polished version of Meerkat, although the latter does have the advantage in terms of users at the moment, but who knows with Twitter backing it, perhaps they could overtake Meerkat in the near future. Periscope also has the advantage of being able to save the videos for use later which might be a great idea as you can upload it to another platform like YouTube later. [iTunes App Store]
