whatsapp plusIf you have ever switched phones and tried installing WhatsApp on your new handset, you’d basically have to start from a blank slate as your chat history and the media received would be gone. Now WhatsApp has a backup feature although it’s not exactly the most convenient nor the most efficient, but that could soon change.

According to the folks at Android Police, they have received a tip that would suggest that WhatsApp in the future could start backing up your chat history and media onto Google Drive. What this means is that users will be able to backup their data into the cloud and be able to recall them on a new handset anytime they want without too much fuss. Of course this is assuming that one has a Google Drive account to begin with.

This was revealed in an email WhatsApp sent to a member of their translation group, and according to the email, it asked the group member to translate certain instructions, some of which made reference to backing up their chat history and media to Google Drive. It’s interesting that WhatsApp has gone with Google Drive instead of another cloud service, but considering the ubiquity of Google accounts, chances are it would be much easier.

There’s no way to confirm if such a feature would arrive, but the evidence is certainly hard to ignore. There’s also no way of telling when the feature will be released, but we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it.
