Google-Chrome

Previously it was planned to phase out support for Google Chrome on Windows XP by May 2015 but the Chrome team has had a change of heart. It announced today that people who use Chrome on Windows XP will keep on receiving updated versions of the browser throughout this year. They’ve decided to extend support for Chrome on Windows XP.

Windows XP has stuck around for longer than Microsoft would have liked. The company has had a hard time trying to bring users up from XP to more recent versions of its operating system.

Microsoft didn’t have much luck with Windows Vista, but Windows 7 did do some damage control. Now the company expects to see an uptick when it releases the significantly changed Windows 10 later this year.

Extension of support for Chrome means that users will continue to receive regular updates and the all important security patches throughout 2015, but it doesn’t seem like the Chrome team is going to carry on supporting the old operating system in 2016.

Google Chrome director of engineering Mark Larson said that they’re aware not everybody can easily switch to a newer operating system and since millions of people are still using XP, “We want those people to have the option to use a browser that’s up-to-date and as safe as possible on an unsupported operating system.”
