Many companies are already hard at work to improve solid-state and lithium-ion batteries. There is a lot of research and work being done on advanced battery technologies to ensure that the devices of the future, and even cars, have ample juice. Google appears to be interested in this as well. According to a new report the Mountain View company is dedicating talent and resources for advanced battery technologies.

Citing people familiar with the matter The Wall Street Journal reports that back in 2012 a team headed by Dr. Ramesh Bhardwaj, who was previously a battery expert at Apple, started testing batteries that suppliers had developed for use in Google’s devices.

The team was then moved into the Google X research lab in 2013 so that it could work on battery technologies that Google itself might develop. Apparently the team working on this project has just four members, with Dr. Bhardwaj leading the effort.

Google can certainly do with improved batteries, since they’re a crucial component in its self-driving cars. Even the first Google Glass wearable device failed to take off due to dismal battery life.

People familiar with the matter tell the scribe that Dr. Bhardwaj and his team is working on improving lithium-ion and solid-state technology for batteries meant for consumer devices.
