Instagram has been under social scrutiny for apparently “biased” guidelines towards nudity. Taking a good lesson from all the blows, the app has finally overhauled its Community Guidelines and now voices strong opinion towards harassment and nudity. The “don’t be rude” section of the guideline has been changed with clear rules and regulations for posting an image. It now states, “it’s never OK to encourage violence or attack anyone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disabilities, or diseases.”

The guideline now clearly mentions Instagram’s intolerance towards certain posts, the app no more accepts the photos related to nudity, genitals, bare buttocks, some photos of female nipples and intercourse . However, supporting the social and medical causes, it accepts the images of breastfeeding and mastectomy scarring. These guidelines are basically a detailed standard for posting images.

The app also mentioned that it will right away bring down the images of children that portray semi or complete nudity, due to the safety reasons. In recent times, many obligations have been raised towards Instagram, regarding its treatment of certain issues based on male and female bodies.

A female comedian, Chelsea Handler has been posting images of breasts and butts, just to see how the app treats male and female nipples. The issue has been raised just to seek gender equality in terms of body genitals and how nudity is differently tackled for both the genders.

In a similar case, Instagram brought down the image twice by the artist Rupi Kaur, depicting menstruation. After being slammed with worldwide criticism, it restored the image and apologized for the removal.
