Audi has launched a new pilot program in San Francisco, allowing its residents to rent vehicles directly from the company. The German car market is offering many of its vehicles and those who are interested in this program can even rent out the Audi R8 supercar. Pricing differs depending on which model you choose to drive, obviously a vanilla four door saloon will be cheaper to rent out than the R8.

Under this pilot program Audi will directly rent cars to San Francisco residents on a per-day basis for up to 28 days at one time. A smartphone will be essential to the entire experience.

Users will lock and unlock the rented car through a smartphone app and even use it for starting the vehicle. They will be provided a digital key card as backup in the likely even that their smartphone is out of charge.

Since this isn’t a conventional car rental arrangement, those who rent a car don’t have to pick it up or drop it off at a certain location. Rather they can opt for Audi concierges to drop the car off and pick it up as and when required, as long as its inside San Francisco city limits.

Pricing depends upon the vehicle chosen, an Audi A5 saloon can be had for $200 per day. Those who don’t mind spending $1,285 per day can rent an R8 Spyder directly from Audi. The more expensive models have a 200 mile per day limit and they will be charged extra if they go over.
