Alzheimer’s disease is where the memories of the person is slowly destroyed over time along with other important mental functions, and while a cure for the disease is still being worked on, Samsung hopes to do its part by trying to slow its side effects down by as much as possible through a smartphone app.

Dubbed Backup Memory, this is a collaborative effort between Samsung and 3SG BBDO where the app will basically help those afflicted by Alzheimer’s to become aware of their immediate surroundings by helping to identify nearby friends and family members. How it works is through the use of Bluetooth where if a family member is nearby, it will detect it and will then display pictures and information about that person on their phone.

Based on this it should help the patient identify who it is that they are talking to and who they are in relation. The app has been tested by the Tunisian Alzheimer’s Association and based on the feedback they’ve received so far, it has been pretty positive. Of course it will take more than an app to help deal with Alzheimer’s, but we suppose every little bit helps. The app is currently available for download via the Google Play Store.
