z4_0We knew that Sony was planning on officially announcing the Xperia Z4 in the future but there was no specific dates mentioned. However recently there was a rumor about a possible announcement on the 20th of April and sure enough it looks like the rumors were right on the money as the Sony Xperia Z4 has been officially announced.

The handset was announced over in Japan where it is already the 20th of April, and based on what we can see so far, rumors of it featuring a metal body and a fingerprint sensor weren’t true after all. To be fair the handset does feature a metal frame around it which we guess is to be expected since Sony has used that design for its previous Xperia handsets. Also overall the design of the Xperia Z4 is nothing new or has much to shout about.

However Sony is claiming is thinner than its predecessor, the Xperia Z3, with a body thickness of 6.9mm. In terms of specs the phone will feature a 5.2-inch Full HD display and a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset and will be accompanied by 3GB of RAM. There will be a 20.7MP rear-facing camera with a wide-angle lens, and a 5.1MP front-facing camera. The camera also has a “cooking mode” feature that supposedly helps make shots of food look more appealing.

A 2,930mAh battery will accompany the phone with Android 5.0 Lollipop preinstalled. As expected Sony will be applying the same water and dust-resistance to the Xperia Z4 with an IP6X rating against dust and an IP5/8 rating for water. No word on pricing but Sony will be launching the phone in Japan this summer, but there was no mention of a release stateside or in other parts of the world.
