tomb raiderThe reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise introduced a slightly darker, grittier, and more serious tone to the game which apparently is something that many gamers have appreciated since. According to Crystal Dynamics, the developer of the game, it seems that the reboot has done extremely well as they have managed to sell a whopping 8.5 million copies in total.

This is up from the 7 million copies they sold in February, meaning that in the span of a little over a month, they have managed to sell an extra 1.5 million copies in the process. The developers go on to claim that the title managed to break records for first-day and first-month sales, and that it is their best-selling Tomb Raider title in its franchise history, which actually speaks volumes considering that Tomb Raider used to be the game back in the day.

According to the developers, they pointed out in a statement to GameSpot that the 8.5 million copies also includes the Definitive Edition version of Tomb Raider which is basically the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version of the game. Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher is naturally thrilled about the success of the game.

In a statement made by Gallagher, “Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players.” The sequel to the game, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is set for a release later this year and will be a timed exclusive to Microsoft’s consoles.
