Smartwatches have gained popularity over the past couple of years and the market has also attracted the attention of Swiss watchmakers who have up till now stayed away from such devices. Major companies like SwatchTag Heuer and Tissot are all developing their smartwatches and now Victorinox wants in as well. The Swiss army knife maker has confirmed that it will unveil its take on the smartwatch early next year.

Talking to Reuters, Victorinox Chief Executive Carl Elsener said that the company’s concept is “something approaching a smartwatch,” whatever that means.

Elsener didn’t reveal any details about his company’s smartwatch, about the features it may have and the hardware it’ll be powered by. We’ll only get to know this information later this year, presumably, if Victorinox decides to talk more about this product.

He did say that the company is looking for the opportunity to expand the functions of its watches, “but at the same time the watch must have a long lifespan compared to a mobile phone or a computer,” he said.

As previously mentioned, Victorinox’s take on the smartwatch will be unveiled early next year, possibly at Baselworld 2016. Like CES, MWC or IFA for tech companies, Baselworld is an annual conference where watchmakers from all over the world gather in Basel, Switzerland to show off their latest creations.
