WhatsApp for Android received a very important update recently but it didn’t bring much in the form of user interface changes. That update actually flipped the switch on voice calling, a feature that WhatsApp users have long waited for. With that out of the way the Facebook-owned company can now go about applying a fresh coat of pain to the app, and it has. The new version that’s out today has an overhauled user interface with Material Design elements.

Material Design is a design philosophy that’s rooted in Lollipop. Google explained it in detail when it announced Lollipop last year. Many developers have since updated their applications to better reflect all of the changes that Material Design has made to the UI of Google’s mobile platform.

WhatsApp is a little late to the party but finally it’s here. Right off the bat you’ll notice that the Material Design makeover makes the app look much better than it previously did.

It has a new deep green title bar when blends into the three different tabs for contacts, chats and calls. There are new buttons in the chat window that let users record voice messages and more.

Profiles and group chat information look much better with a clean layout and large cover image. Tweaks have also been made to the media selection screen and the settings menu.

The latest version of WhatsApp for Android hasn’t gone live on the Google Play Store yet but you can download it from WhatsApp’s website. Expect it to go live on the Play Store in a couple of hours.
