If you have a 4K TV from Samsung you can already stream 4K content through Comcast’s Xfinity in UHD application but later this year the cable provider is going to launch an all new 4K Ultra High Definition set-top box to bring this technology to more people. The Comcast Xi4 set-top box will be released at some point later this year, it will be the first box from Comcast to support 4K from the get go. Comcast has also said that next year it might release a model which adds support from content in high dynamic range or HDR.

Obviously subscribers will need to have access to 4K content in order to enjoy what the Comcast Xi4 set-top box has to offer. The cable provider says that its subscribers will be able to make “unlimited virtual 4K linear channels” by creating personalized playlists using the Xfinity in UHD library.

Titles included in the library are films made originally for IMAX theaters, like Rocky Mountain Express, Fighter Pilot, Antarctica and others, TV shows from networks like Syfy, USA and Starz will also be available.

Accessing all of this 4K content isn’t going to cost customers anything extra, they’ll get this with their usual cable package. Those who are after additional content can look towards the likes of Netflix and Amazon who have both started streaming content in 4K.
