meerkatBy now we’re sure many of you guys should be familiar with the Meerkat app, an app that made its debut at SXSW which basically allows users to use their mobile devices to create live streams that people can tune into, kind of like Twitch for your phone. With it being a social app, it seemed ripe for companies like Facebook to acquire it, but as it turns out it could have been someone else.

According to the folks at Phandroid, they have recently discovered a trademark filed by LG for the name “Meerkat”. While it is entirely possible that this could be a name for an entirely different product, its description certainly sounds like the Meerkat video streaming app, leading us to believe that perhaps LG might have acquired the company.

The description of the trademark reads, “IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: IP camera; Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras; Cameras for surveillance; Photographic apparatus and instruments; Cameras; Webcams; Mobile phones; Smart phones; Application software for smart phones; Application software for smart phone cameras.”

Sounds a lot like Meerkat, doesn’t it? Either that or LG is planning their own competing platform in which the name would most likely be rejected as we believe Meerkat would have already trademarked their name. In any case we’re not sure what LG wants with a mobile streaming platform like Meerkat, but we’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled for more info.
