The live streaming app Meerkat has steadily been gaining popularity and as its user base increases the app gets new features. Cementing its move away from Twitter, the latest update for Meerkat on iOS brings support for Facebook. For users this means that they can now directly push Meerkat alerts to the world’s largest social network.

An interesting change to note in this update is Meerkat coming out from under Twitter’s shadow. Users no longer need to sign in with a Twitter account, if they choose to do so they can very well sign in through Facebook login.

The latest update for Meerkat also adds address book scanning which will allow users to instantly brings friends on to the service as long as they let the app scan their contacts.

Meerkat has enough reason to move away from Twitter, given that the micro-blogging network first cut off access to its social graph data and then launched Periscope, it’s own live streaming rival. Periscope has since become more popular than Meerkat.

Meerkat’s latest update also brings minor changes, for example popular streams are now promoted to the app’s front page and the app also gets emoji support. Whenever users select an emoji their profile image will be changed to the emoji they selected for a short time.
