nintendo-wii-u-southwest-airlinesChina is a huge market given its population which basically translates into a lot of potential customers that companies can tap into. Recently the country lifted its ban on consoles which meant that companies such as Sony and Microsoft could officially sell their products in China, whereby prior to that PlayStations and Xbox units were typically bought via grey market imports.

So what about Nintendo? Unfortunately it seems that the Japanese company has abandoned their plans to enter the China market. This is according to Tokyo-based games consultant Serkan Toto who posted on Twitter saying, “Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that Nintendo will not execute prior plan to manufacture consoles for the Chinese market.”

Previously Nintendo did state that they were looking into entering emerging markets and were considering releasing consoles designed specifically for such markets. Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata was quoted back then as saying, “We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have. The product and price balance must be made from scratch.”

Unfortunately at least as far as the Chinese market is concerned, it seems that Nintendo has no such plans for now. We can’t be sure if this only applies to the company’s current products, like the Wii U and 3DS, or if it will apply to future Nintendo products like the company’s next-gen console the Nintendo NX.
