nintendo mobileA couple of months ago, Nintendo surprised everyone when they announced they would finally be getting into mobile gaming, and recently during the company’s financial briefing, Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata revealed that moving forward, mobile gaming is expected to become an important part of Nintendo’s revenue structure.

According to Iwata, it seems that while mobile gaming will be a new market that they will be focusing on, the company is expected to remain committed to its core business and will not let mobile gaming distract them from that. What this means is that Nintendo will continue to focus on dedicated gaming systems and software, but remain open to developing mobile titles.

We suppose this makes especially since Nintendo’s entrance into the mobile gaming scene will not be done alone. They have partnered with Japanese company DeNA who will be helping out with the development process, thus leaving Nintendo free to focus on their core offerings. In the meantime Nintendo had previously outlined that they plan to have as many as five mobile titles launched by March 2017.

The number does seem small but according to Iwata, “You may think it is a small number but when we aim to make each title a hit, and because we want to thoroughly operate every one of them for a significant amount of time after their releases, this is not a small number at all and should demonstrate our serious commitment to the smart device business.”
