surreal-visionIt looks like companies these days figure out that the most efficient way of expanding would be to acquire other companies that so happen to have the kind of technology which you covet. Having said that, Oculus VR has just announced that they have picked up Surreal Vision today, which would mean that Oculus VR will be able to harness the company’s expertise when it comes to recreating real-time 3D representations of the outside world, all within a virtualized environment, now how about that? In other words, virtual telepresence will soon be a possibility, allowing you to be in a far off place digitally without doing so physically.

So far, whatever was garnered by Surreal Vision concerning this particular acquisition does sound as though it will be able to fuel Oculus’ foray where mixed reality is concerned. Mixed reality will merge live, real-world content alongside virtualized additions, and this was best, or more famously, demonstrated by Microsoft’s HoloLens project.

Surreal Vision’s founding team comprises of a trio of PhD holders in the field of real-time scene reconstruction, and this acquisition would mean the UK-based squad will join up Oculus Research in Redmond, Washington, in order to continue their work. Now that is going to be a definite change in culture and environment, good luck in adapting to life Stateside!
