samsung_patentHaving a hybrid device in theory sounds like a good idea. After all it does seem to be very convenient to have a laptop with a detachable screen that doubles up as a tablet, that way users have more freedom in their movements and they won’t have to buy separate devices. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately it seems hybrid devices have yet to truly catch on, but in the meantime it has not stopped Samsung from toying around with ideas. According to a recently discovered patent by the folks at Patently Mobile, it seems to suggest that Samsung is interested in creating a laptop with a smartphone dock.

What the dock does is that it allows the user to insert their smartphone into it, thus transforming their Android phone into a Windows laptop. Basically the smartphone would contain most of the innards required to operate a laptop, and the dock itself would be the laptop’s display, keyboard, mouse, and etc. Alternatively the smartphone could also be used as a trackpad due to its touchscreen display.

If anything this reminds us of the ASUS Padfone series in which a smartphone is inserted into a tablet dock, thus transforming the device into a tablet using the phone to power it. It is an intriguing idea but whether or not such a product would be successful remains to be seen, but what say you? Is this a device you might be interested in purchasing?
