Xperia_Z3__colour_range.0Apple has been known for not hopping onto the bandwagon. For example it took them a couple of years before they finally introduced LTE to the iPhone, and even longer for them to release larger displays. Heck, as it stands the iPhone is still running 1GB of RAM while there are Android devices running as much as 4GB.

Many have lambasted Apple for this but could Sony be thinking of taking a page out of Apple’s playbook? Despite QHD displays becoming common in flagship smartphones, Sony has yet to launch one with the latest Xperia Z3+ still sporting a Full HD display. Well as it turns out it seems that Sony does not believe that it is the right time for such displays yet.

Speaking to Focus Taiwan, Sony Taiwan’s General Manager Jonathan Lin was quoted as saying that they would only launch phones with QHD displays when they “can make significant improvements in display quality and digital image processing technology.” The company does not seem to believe that displays right now can truly benefit from such a high resolution.

Of course there are some who will gladly agree with Sony, claiming that such high resolution displays would lead to more battery drain. There is also the argument that you can really tell the difference between such high resolutions unless you were to really look closely at it, which we suppose is true. However the fact is that the competition has QHD displays so the question is why would you pay for a Sony phone with “lower” specs when you could get a competitor for “better”?

We’re not sure if Sony is making the right call here but it is their call to make, but what say you? Do you think it matters if your phone has a QHD or FHD display? Or do you think that at the end of the day it’s really just marketing, kind of like the megapixel race?
