Total Recall, a Hawaii company, has recently sued Oculus VR (the company that recently sent out a special invite). Grounds for this legal entanglement? Total Recall claims that Oculus VR has misappropriated confidential information and proprietary technology. This particular lawsuit was filed at the U.S. District Court in Northern California, where it claimed that they hired Oculus founder Palmer Luckey in 2011 in order to come up with a prototype for a head-mounted display. Needless to say, it has been alleged that Mr. Luckey eventually made use of the information to come up with the Oculus Rift headset.
When approached, an Oculus spokeswoman did not want to comment on the situation. Total Recall Technologies also mentioned in the suit that it forked out an unspecified amount of dough for the prototype’s parts and also managed to secure exclusive rights to Mr. Luckey’s design. Mr. Luckey and Total Recall Technologies partner Thomas Seidl did send notes to Mr. Luckey some time in late 2011 and 2012 that concerned the improvement of the headset’s design.
Total Recall Technologies then claimed that Mr. Luckey decided to roll out a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 in order to promote his very own head-mounted display, calling it the Oculus Rift, before bringing to life his very own company which was allegedly in breach of his contract with his previous employer. Damages are being seeked without stating the amount, and we do wonder how all of this will turn out eventually.
