hangouts_1Google Hangouts is Google’s instant messenger platform where users can chat with each other, create group chats, and even hold video conferences with multiple users at once. It also comes bundled on pretty much every Android phone (there are some exceptions but that’s another story).

Well if you’re wondering how many times the app has been pre-installed on Android devices, you might be interested to learn that Hangouts has been pre-installed a whopping 1 billion times! This means that there are at least 1 billion Android handsets out there with the app installed, and let’s not forget that there are probably users out there who downloaded it manually on other platforms too.

We suppose pre-installed isn’t as impressive compared to manual installs, like apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger, but it’s still pretty cool nonetheless. It also joins the club of other Google apps and services which has seen a billion installs too, including Google Maps, Gmail, Search, and YouTube.

As the folks at Phandroid have pointed out, this is also a sign that Google needs to start paying more attention to the app, especially if there are at least a potential 1 billion users who are relying on it for daily communication. In the meantime are you a dedicated Hangouts user? Or have you largely ignored the app ever since it came bundled on your phone?
