Say you’re sitting down on your couch and you’re too lazy to get up to the fridge and grab yourself a beer. Instead you’re hoping that maybe one day technology could get to the point where you’d just yell out “Beer me!” and the fridge will toss a beer can into your open hands. Well that future is getting closer, thanks to Google.

To celebrate Canada Day, which is on the 1st of July, Canadian beer maker Molson and Google have teamed up to create a beer fridge that can be unlocked using just your voice. It won’t be tossing beers your way but we reckon it’s halfway there. The fridge will rely on Google’s Speech Recognition API and will be able to recognize voice input from 40 different languages.

To unlock the fridge, all the user has to say is, “I am Canadian” in 6 different languages, which is Molson’s marketing slogan, and the fridge will unlock for the user allowing them to access its treasure trove of beers. For those thinking that this is just a marketing stunt, we suppose it is but at the same time the fridge is real.

It is built by a company called ThinkingBox and will actually make an appearance in Toronto during the PanAm games which will be kicking off next month. To see it in action check out the video above, or check out the one below to see how it was all put together.
