google logoWhen it comes to productivity at school, the workplace, or in government organizations, safe to say that there is a good chance that we could be looking at Microsoft’s products, ranging from their suite of Office productivity software to email services like Outlook and Exchange. However over in the UK, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) appear to be abandoning tradition in favor of Google.

According to a report from The Register, HMRC has decided to make the move away from using Microsoft’s products in its department. Instead they will turn to Google’s own productivity software and cloud storage services, marking it as the first government body in the UK to make such a full transition.

Google’s head of public sector sales in the UK David Fitton wrote, “The acceptance by HMRC that they can store OFFICIAL information offshore in Google data-centres represents a major change and endorsement of Google’s approach to managing sensitive information.” With the switch, it will see more than 70,000 employees make the switch from Microsoft to Google.

In fact over in the UK, Google’s services appear to be pretty well-received. As it stands there are about 2,500 Cabinet Officers who are already on Gmail, so safe to say this exodus from Microsoft to Google will no doubt make the latter company very happy.
