Oculus-Rift-5According to an earlier report, it has been estimated that Apple has sold as many as 2.8 million Apple Watches. This is a huge number and is no doubt greater than all the Android Wear devices that were shipped in 2014. That being said, the IDC has recently released their own forecast and according to them, they expect that 2015 will see as many as 72.1 million units shipped.

This represents a growth of 173.3% for the year of 2015 as it is a huge increase over last year where it was estimated that 26.4 million wearables were shipped. It should be noted that wearables include headsets, smartwatches and fitness trackers such as those from Fitbit and Xiaomi, both of whom are currently in the first and second place when it comes to wearable shipments.

According to Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst, Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, “The demand for basic wearables, those that do not run third party apps, has been absolutely astounding. Vendors like Fitbit and Xiaomi have helped propel the market with their sub-$100 bands, and IDC expects this momentum will continue throughout 2015.”

IDC also believes that devices like the Apple Watch and Microsoft’s Hololens are indicative of the change in the computing landscape, not to mention that it was recently that Oculus revealed the consumer version of the Oculus Rift that is due in Q1 2016, but what do you guys think? Will the growth of wearables be as astronomical as the IDC has predicted?
