Quite a long time back LG promised that it would release an official bootloader unlock tool for the LG G3 but it didn’t come around to actually doing that. Many thought that perhaps LG had given up on these plans but clearly it didn’t, because today the company’s official bootloader unlock tool has been released even though it just works with one device and is only available currently in the EU open market.

Unlocking the bootloader is one of the first steps that Android modders need to do in order to tinker with their devices. Many OEMs like to keep their bootloaders tightly locked so users have to rely upon third party solutions, which can often be hard to come by.

Some OEMs have taken a different route, Motorola and Sony have helped developers try to get the bootloaders on their devices unlocked but they’re merely the exception to the rule.

LG has outlined the various risks that bootloader unlocking poses on the page for its official tool, and it does mention that doing this is going to void the warranty and perhaps leave the device vulnerable to security exploits.

If all that doesn’t deter you, and you happen to have the G4 model for the EU open market, then you can use the company’s tool to unlock the handset’s bootloader. LG has said that it is going to “add more devices with unlockable bootloaders unlocking permission progressively.”
