Netflix has already established itself as a truly global player in the online video streaming arena, it boasts a massive content library which subscribers in various markets can stream on-demand. The company has also put in considerable resources towards developing original content much of which has brought in critical acclaim. Expansion is certainly on its mind and according to a new report Netflix might be eyeing India as its next market.

A report out of India claims that Netflix might launch its online streaming service in the country by 2016, and that it has the potential to disrupt India’s existing DTH or direct-to-home market.

Netflix is also expected to tailor its service to local tastes and offer Indian-centric shows as well as TV shows and movies from Hollywood, Netflix already plays host to many titles from India’s film industry.

When contacted by the scribe Netflix didn’t really confirm or deny that it has any plans of entering India, reiterating that the company has resolved to go “nearly global” by the end of 2016, so it goes without saying that this possibility certainly exists.

Obviously it’s too soon to say right now how much Netflix will ask for its service in India. It goes without saying that Netflix will have to look into the broadband infrastructure of every new market that it intends to enter to ensure that subscribers will be able to stream HD quality content without having to spend significant amounts of money to upgrade their internet connections.
