google-power-plantGoogle’s reach in our everyday life is so pervasive, that many services that we access online will ensure at least one server at Google’s data center come to life. Data centers are basically the engines of the Internet, and with more and more people jumping aboard these days, there is a greater need for bigger and better data centers – not to mention ensuring that they are more power and energy efficient, too. Google has expanded their data centers not too long ago in Iowa, Georgia, Singapore and Belgium, and have added their 14th global one in Alabama.

What makes their 14th site globally different from the rest would be the fact that it will be located on the same grounds as that of the Widows Creek coal power plant in Jackson County. The coal power plant is tipped to shut down soon, and hence Google wants to tap into the potential of redeveloping large industrial sites such as this. Making use of the plants’ numerous electric transmission lines works great to bring in a slew of renewable energy to power their new data center, and the ultimate goal of this data center is to have it run on 100% renewable energy. Definitely a worthy goal to pursue, don’t you think so? [Press Release]
