Nest conducted an event today to announce new products, one of them was the Nest Cam and the other was the second generation Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. It brings several new features which let people know that the alarm is working and running safely, it’s capable of doing much more than sounding an alarm when it detects smoke, and now it can do all of that with up to a ten year product lifetime.

The design has been updated to make the product 11 percent smaller so that it sits more flush against the wall or ceiling. The new Nest Protect has a stainless steel screen with tiny hexagonal holes that are designed to let the smoke in for assessment. It even has a brighter “Pathlight” which is an LED right on the face of the product which lets up when it detects you passing by.

Nest has included a split-spectrum sensor in the new Protect which uses two wavelengths of light to weed out both fast and slow-burning fires, it’s said to be a big improvement than the photoelectric smoke detector in the original Protect alarm.

Through the companion app users can now hush false alarms, or simply shut the alarm off if they have the situation under control. All of the sensors, Wi-Fi connection, power as well as horn and speaker on all alarms can be tested from within the app. Moreover the Nest Protect will automatically test the speaker and the horn quietly and quickly once a month using a built-in microphone.

The new Nest Protect can be ordered today from the company’s website for $99 a pop, it will start shipping in July.
