sony ps4A couple of days ago, Microsoft surprised us all when they announced that they would offer limited Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on the Xbox One. This essentially meant that gamers with Xbox 360 games could play some of their games on the newer console, so it wouldn’t be a complete waste of their library of games.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Sony and the PlayStation 4. Understandably many had expected to respond to Microsoft’s initiative with one of their own, and if you are part of that group you probably shouldn’t hold your breath as Sony Computer Entertainment’s head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida pretty much shot down that notion.

According to Yoshida, “The backward compatibility news was interesting. The technology involved must be very challenging.” However he later adds, “The announcement didn’t change. I don’t think we will change our approach. The PlayStation 4 doesn’t have backward compatibility.”

Is this bad news for PlayStation 4 gamers? We suppose in some ways gamers would be a bit disappointed that they won’t get to play some of their older games on their console, but unless you’ve sold off your PS3, you could always fire it up once in a while for nostalgic purposes. In the meantime Sony has stated that they will continue to focus on creating new services and features for the PS4.
