Twitter is already the go-to social medium for millions of people around the world who are following news, events and trends in real-time. Despite being limited to 140 characters, tweets are now actively used as means of breaking news, commenting on the latest trends and following up with events taking place all across the globe. Twitter knows this and is working on something new which is going to further improve the curated tweets experience, it’s called Project Lightning.

Lightning will be included in the upcoming update of the Twitter app which will feature a dedicated icon tapping on which will take users to another screen which features curated events.

What’s interesting is that Twitter isn’t relying upon an algorithm to curate these tweets, instead it has created a team of editors who will select what they believe to be the most relevant tweets about an event, trend or news story and then compile them into a collection. Twitter is putting together an editorial policy to ensure that content is reviewed before it ends up on Lightning.

In Lightning view all videos, photos and tweets will be displayed in full-screen allowing users to easily swipe through them, content from Periscope and Vine will also be included. The focus is on speed and Twitter says photos will load super fast and videos will load automatically, it has already brought autoplaying video to users timelines.

Lightning won’t just be limited to users who are logged in. People who visit Twitter.com will be shown Lightning events as well which essentially makes Twitter a curated news service for people who don’t have an interest in using its mico-blogging service.
