smartband_2_appLast year Sony launched their fitness tracker in the form of the Sony SmartBand. It is possible that Sony could follow up with a successor this year. In fact it was early this year that a potential successor in the form of the Sony SmartBand 2 was spotted at the FCC indicating that it was in the works and could be launched soon.

Well the good news is that you might not have to wait much longer. According to the folks at Android Police, they have noted that Sony has officially launched the Sony SmartBand 2’s companion app on the Google Play Store. In fact the name of the app is called the SmartBand 2 which kind of gives away the name of the upcoming device already.

What’s interesting is the fact that the app was launched (it has since been removed, but not before screenshots were taken) ahead of the device’s official announcement, but presumably with the app being released we can expect the SmartBand 2 to be announced very soon, although at the moment it is really anyone’s guess as to when that might be.

The app also confirms what we knew of the device before, which is that it will come with a heart rate tracker. This is a notable improvement as many of Sony’s competitors such as Fitbit and Jawbone have included heart rate trackers in their fitness wearables. In any case we’ll be keeping an eye out for the Sony SmartBand 2 so check back with us later for the details!
