If you have ever seen a turntable, you know that it’s flat and that the records played on the turntables are laid flat on top of it as well, but it seems that the folks at Gramovox have decided to turn the idea on its head by launching a device called The Floating Record, which as you can see in the video above is for a turntable that plays music vertically.

So why reinvent the wheel? According to its creators, it’s about art. “We yearned for a visceral vinyl experience that showcased the record as both art and a medium to produce analog sound. The result is a high-performance turntable that plays your records vertically—producing the illusion that it’s floating.”

We have to admit that it is a rather unique take on the regular turntable and how it works is through the use of a polished acrylic platter, a record clamp, and a silicon belt that helps to drive the record at speeds of 33.3 or 45 RPM. It also appears to be pretty easy to use as well. Similar to CD players that have standing CDs, all the listener has to do is prop their record onto the player, screwed in the cap, put the needle on the record and they’re good to go.

Safe to say that many are in love with the idea as the project has managed to raise over $700,000 which is way, way past its original goal of $50,000. If you’d like to help fund it even further or place an order for yourself, head on over to its Kickstarter page for the details.
